vintage modern challenge

Oh, wait...isn't that an oxymoron? Vintage and modern. It seems that the quilting universe (yes, I said universe because you never know) has an opinion on what is modern quilting. You can find many articles about it and it's worth a Google. I really don't have a strong stance on what modern quilting is but I think if you were to categorize my quilts they would lean towards modern. I'm not even sure if I would join my local quilting guild or the modern quilting guild. Yes, there are two separate guilds. So tricky, right? However, with that said, I love the look of anything bright, vintage and with lots of floral. I also love some of the geometrical solid print quilts. Not all of them, but some of them. I do have to say, I'm not a lover of batiks. I guess I just don't get them, although, I have seen some beautifully pieced quilts made with batiks. So, with ALL that said, aren't most quilts today considered modern since it's 2013?

Back to why I started this blog post....I recently learned of a Modern Mini Quilt Challenge 2013 by Ellison Lane Quilts and lately I've been trying to challenge myself to think outside the box. To not try and make a fast, easy quilt, but something that might take me an afternoon to make a block or two and frustrate the hell out of me. I'm also trying to think outside the box when buying fabrics or pulling fabrics from my stash and pairing them and reminding myself that collections and be split up and go on their merry separate ways. So this challenge couldn't have come at a more perfect time. Challenge accepted.

Fabrics are from Anna Maria Horner's Field Study and Noteworthy and Mama Said Sew by Sweetwater for Moda. Block is 16 x16 inches and I got the inspiration from Scrap Basket Beauties by Kim Brackett. I did a free motion spiral quilting (first time) and that was quick and easy. My circles aren't perfect but that's just charm, right? I decided to make mine into a pillow because I am more likely to keep this on my bed or the couch than to hang it up.

So, I am going to be honest and tell you my first block ended up looking like a swastika. I think it was how I placed the fabrics, but I was so disappointed. I spent my entire "nap-time" break to make this one block. I sent my husband a picture of it just to make sure it wasn't just me and his first response was "are you making a swastika quilt?" His sense of humor is charming, huh? So, I scraped that block with the most perfect points that I have ever made in my life and started over with the star block above.

  4. Found your link at Monday Funday. The colors of the quilt caught my eye. I'm not a huge fan of grandma-style quilts because they don't go with anything in my house (and they just aren't my style), but I could totally see a fun quilt like this in my house.
