Trick or Treat Bags - a tutorial

Hey guys! It's October!! I am so excited for cooler weather and of course all the holidays just around the corner, including HALLOWEEN! We are in our new home and new neighborhood that is full of young families and we can't wait to participate in Trick or Treating. I grew up in the country where we didn't get many trick or treaters and then when Mr. Relish and I bought our first house, we were so excited to finally have our own trick or treaters, but unfortunatly, we were on the edge of the neighborhood and only received one, ONE, trick or treater. Bah!! I was so bummed! Since then, we have always taken the kiddos over to my sister's neighborhood, but I think this year is our year! HAHA!

Anyway, I've been working on the girl's costumes...I've got one Fancy Nancy and one Zarina Pirate Fairy. Those should be fun!

I wanted to make their trick or treat bags last year and just never got around to making them. I was hanging out at the shop, Urban Spools, and fell in love with Basic Grey's Erie halloween collection. So one charm pack and one yard for lining and straps later, I was set to go.

Here is a quick rundown so if you are needing some trick or treat bags you can make these in an afternoon.

Supplies:
1 charm pack
1 yard of fabric for lining and straps
scrap batting ( four 15 x 15" pieces)
coordinating thread.

1. Arrange four, 3x3 panels in a layout that you like. Piece together with a 1/4" seam allowance. Press.

2. Baste the each panel to your batting. You do not need to have a backing. Quilt as desired. I went with an easy spider web. I quilted diagonal lines first all meeting in the center, then circled around each of the lines. Super fast and easy!

3. Trim up your panels. Measure your panel once you trim it. That will be the size your cut your four lining pieces. My panels measured 13.5 x 13.5" so I cut four, 13.5" x 13.5".

4. Now for the handles. You need to cut two, 4" x 44" (width of fabric) strips. Press in half longwise, then press in on each side towards your first crease creating double fold binding.

5. Topstitch 1/8th from the edge on both long edges.

6. Cut each strip in half creating 4 handles total.

7. Attach the handles to the top side of each of the four panels. Baste stitch along the top edge 1/8th from the edge to hold in place.

8. Now it's time to stitch your outside and lining panels. Take two outside panels and lay then right sides together. Stitch along three of the four sides using a 1/2 inch seam allowance. Do not stitch on the side with the basted handles! Do this with the other two outside panels.

9. You will do the same with the lining pieces as you did in step 8, except you will want to leave a 4" opening on the bottom of the back and leave one short side open.

10. Clip your corners.

11. Assembling the bags: Take your outside bag with wrong side facing out and place your lining that is right side facing out. Stitch along the top edge 1/2" from the edge. I like to trim up the top before I turn right side out. Turn right side out using the hole you left in the lining. Press the top edge and topstitch around the top. Finally, topstitch the lining closed.

  1. Love these bags. We don't really have trick or treating in Australia, but I see that changing over the coming years as the stores and people get more into Halloween - I can't wait!

  2. These would be an excellent use for the Halloween fabric I just had to have. I can't wait to see the girls' costumes. I didn't know there was such a thing as a pirate fairy, but am relieved since Linnea has been pointing at the pirate costume in the closet and saying, "Please, please..." until Dad puts it on her. With her new bob haircut, she looks every bit a little boy, so maybe if I added wings I wouldn't get so many, "What a cute little boy!" comments. Wings or not, I don't think she's likely to go for an alternate costume.
