Feathers Quilt

I am just so excited about sharing this quilt today! It took me a couple of months here and there and finished it up last week and got some great pictures of it Tuesday! We have this amazing nature trail by our house and  after just a little walk, I found a nice secluded area, with a beautiful creek,  where I wouldn't get any bizarre stares was able to relax and really takes some great shots of quilts that desperately needed some blog love. I can't wait to share those soon! Anyway, back to Feathers....

Feathers Quilt

Back in November, Michelle, from Urban Spools, asked me if I would like to do this quilt as a class and of course I said yes and ran home with my pattern! I had already gotten my hands on a fat quarter bundle of Alison's Handcrafted and picked a Robert Kaufman Chambray in Stone, which is like a taupe with a hint of silver.

I'm not going to lie, this pattern is a fairly simple design to stitch, but it's entirely made of paper pieced blocks so takes a bit of time. It also took a good hour to pick off all those papers on the back once it was pieced together and then a good vacuum from all the papers! Ha!  If you are new to paper piecing, this is a great start. The lines are easy to sew, and you precut all your pieces so there is no guessing if your fabric is big enough to cover you space on the paper.

Feathers Quilt

I finished the quilt top right after Christmas but left it hanging while I hem-hawed over how I wanted to quilt it. I knew it deserved more than just an edge-to-edge or meandering design but wasn't confident enough on the longarm to do any free motion quilting. After trolling IG and the internet to see how others quilted it, I decided the ones I loved the most were just using lines. So, I used my straight longarm ruler for the first time and really enjoyed it! It takes practice and takes a bit longer to quilt but it's sooo worth it.

Feathers Quilt

It's now hanging up at Urban Spools so we can entice everyone to sign up for the workshop in March and/or buy the kit (online too!). I promise, it's really hard to refuse! You can also get the pattern in Alison Glass' shop here.

Thank so much for visiting and hope you have a great weekend! I'll be linking up with all my favorites this week (Linky Party Tab above) and Crazy Mom Quilts!

  5. Ohh, I really like the crisp look of this quilt, and the setting for the photo is beautiful. I laughed when I read about your need to vacuum the papers. I've been known to wear those bits to the store and to walk them all around the house. It's worth it, though for the fun of paper piecing.
