Uptown square...

Uptown Square

Ok, so there isn't a square in this quilt what so ever...but that makes it ironic, right?

Uptown Square

I made this little quilt using a fat eighth bundle of Lush Uptown by Erin Michael for Moda. I was on the fence with this collection and loved it in theory, but it actually didn't grow on me until it was washed and photographed.

And oh-mylanta, it's a cold, windy day in Dallas! Although, the overcast did make it easy with lighting during the photo shoot! I really had hoped to use this photo shoot to work on my Plum and June Photography Challenge this month, but it was just too windy and cold to concentrate. I made sure to hang it over the muddy area and not the creek just in case.

I don't generally gravitate towards burnt orange and this collection is loaded with it! Might be because I am an Aggie and we bleed maroon and despise burnt orange. But it has grown on me, kinda like my longhorn hubby did. haha

I decided to try out one of my new rulers, Tri Recs by EZ Quilting, and went with a triangle pattern. I got mine at JoAnns for pretty cheap (less than $10) using a coupon. It was easy enough to cut and piece, but for some reason I was terrible at keeping my points.

TIPS: Make sure you rows have an odd amount of triangles with a boot at each end in order to create the diamond effect. Also, you need twice as many triangles in each row than columns to make a square quilt. This is where I failed. I like that it's long, though, because it makes it perfect to cover your tootsies while sitting on the chair. This quilt has a bit of a rustic feel to it and really love the way it looks on our leather couch by the fire place. Mr. Relish approves of it and says it's not too girly. Whew, I was really worried about that part <--that's sarcasm there. hehe Uptown Square

I decided on an organic/wood FMQ quilting approach for the quilting to mirror the back and used Aurfil 50 wt in white. The binding is from the leftover strips after cutting the triangles. So basically I cut one 6 x 22 inch strip from the 9 x 22 inch fat eight piece and was left with a 3 x 22 inch strip. I then trimmed that down to 2 1/2 x 22 inches to make the binding.

Thanks for visiting me and my ironic quilt and hope you give this one a try! Linking up with all my friends on the right and Crazy Mom Quilts!

  4. this is lovely and I love the orange in it! I too have the tri rec but have to own up to only using it once!! too many fancy templates I have bought and not tried, the latest one is Joseph`s coat and admit to having not even taken it out of its wrapper yet. I need to spend some time experimenting but time is a problem!! How did I ever find time to work I wonder as now I am retired and live on my own time seems to fly and I only get half of what I want to do done in a day!!

    1. Hey there, Margaret! I am in the same boat regarding the fancy rulers. But we will really NEED them one day, right? haha I thought the same thing when the girls started pre-school and thought about all the extra free time I would have to do chores and quilting and it's not as much as I thought. Oh well! Thanks for the visit!

  5. Love the colors! It's beautiful. I just used that same ruler for the first time and it took me awhile to get the hang of the points too.

  7. I don't think I've seen anyone use the whole line together on a quilt yet. I really like how it all looks. All of those blues, reds and oranges really make each other pop. It looks really great! It's the perfect mix of summer to fall colors that will look cheery in winter and spring as well. I'm sure glad your life-long "not too girly" aspirations have finally been met, congratulations ;)

    1. I am a sucker for keeping a collection together! I try so hard to separate but the only way I can manage that is if I don't buy the complete set...haha! I think it reminds me of the changing colors for fall. We are still waiting for that to happen here in Dallas. Soon, Im sure! Haha, yes, I am slowly moving away from pinks and girly (except for Acadia - couldn't resist) and trying out more bold/masculine type prints. Thanks for visiting, Jeifner!!

  8. I know what you mean about this fabric collection. My LQS carries it and I've looked at it many times. But I always find something else. Your quilt is making me rethink that decision. Your quilt is really lovely.

    1. Thanks! I kept staring at this bundle in my stash thinking what the heck was I thinking! haha But there is something about them all together on the leather sofa or even here next to the light post. Glad I forced myself to make this quilt! Thanks for visiting and hope you decide to make something from the Lush!

  9. I feel the same as you with this fabric; I love it in theory but it just doesn't "speak" to me yet I want it anyway.... It looks absolutely stunning in your quilt though. Great tips about the triangles; I'm putting together a triangle quilt too and have been coming across the same issues... particularly with trying to count how many need in rows/columns!!

    1. Thanks so much, Jo! I am so glad I forced myself to use these fabrics instead of sit in my stash way to long. Sometimes the quilt pattern and time of year can make you rethink your selection and end up loving the outcome. Funny how that works! Glad Im not the only one with triangle issues! I just cut and started piecing and then realized all my mistakes and had to pick them all out. So Im glad to help anyone else avoid those pesky seam rippers! Thanks for visiting!
